How to Make a New Lawn
When you are preparing a new lawn you will need to choose between grass seed or laying turf. Seeding with lawn grass seed is a great deal lower-priced than turf and has the benefit that you have a wider range of various sorts of lawn seed to pick from. The best period to start the lawn is in the Spring or Fall as you need moist and reasonably warm conditions. The summer isn’t an ideal time to sow a lawn as you will have to water very frequently and hotter conditions are not ideal for the young seedlings to grow.
Different types of grasses grow at different rates so the length of time it takes for your new lawn to be sturdy enough to use will be dependant on the type and the mixture of lawn seed that you used. You’ll also want to think about the kind of grass seed you should use. There are specific shade grass seed for regions that do not get the sun, sunny grass seed for regions that do! An extremely popular product is Scotts lawn seed.
Preparing Your Area
Ahead of seeding the lawn you should prepare the site correctly. The area you have chosen should be dug thoroughly and all stones removed and large clods broken down. Rake over the section and compact gently with your feet. The surface must then be scraped carefully to make grooves for the seeds.
How to Seed the Lawn
There are two ways used to seed a lawn, by hand and by means of a machine. To use a machine, weigh out the amount of seed blend required for the area then put half into the machine and sow by moving up and down the area in strips. When you reach end of each strip, to avoid over seeding, either cover the ground with some plastic or shut off the holes in the machine. You may also use sticks placed in the ground or garden twine to direct you. At this point put the remainder of the grass seeds into the machine and, walking perpendicular to the initial rows, finish off seeding the lawn.
If you’re hand seeding the lawn it’s a good plan to split the area into parts of a square yard using thread and canes. Assess the amount of lawn seed you need for each section, weight this out and add to a small pot. Mark about how much this is so that you will not have to weigh out each time. Uniformly sow the first section, setting seeds in both directions so that they’re applied consistently. Now restock the pot to around the same level as before and seed the next segment. Go on until the whole lawn area is seeded.
When the whole area has been seeded rake over gently and irrigate thoroughly.During the next seven days to fortnight ensure you water frequently if is does not rain. The seedlings should begin to come through in the course of this time.
Mowing a New Lawn
Once the grass seedlings are approximately 5 cm high you may cut the grass for the first time using a rotary lawnmower. Carefully gather grass clippings or use a rake and be careful not to disturb the young seedlings.
