Choosing the Right Mower for Your Lawn

If you’re shopping for a new mower how do you know which type to choose? There are many different types with a huge difference in price from a few hundred dollars to four or five thousand! It can be a big investment so it’s very important to choose the mower that’s right for your lawn and your budget. We’ve gathered together some information about the different types to help you decide.

Push Mowers

Reel mowers without engines are only for very small lawns or people with lots of enery and time to spare! Priced around $100 they are the cheapest but lack any of the features found on more expensive mowers.

Electric mowers

Next in price corded or cordless mowers are priced between $200 and $400. Light in weight and more environmentally friendly than gas powered mowers they do have the disadvantage of either having to lug a cord around or limited time between recharges for the cordless models. The corded models are also limited in range to about 100ft from a power outlet. Cordless models are more expensive than the corded models and all electric mowers are less powerful than the top range gas powered models. They should be adequate however for all but the largest lawn.

Walk Behind Gas Mowers

Powerful lawnmowers with many more features than push or electric mowers they can reach a comfortable 4 MPH. Recommended for lawns of less than half an acre they sell for between $400 and $700.

Zero Turn Lawnmowers

For the householder with a large lawn with many obstacles such as benches, flower beds, trees etc a zero turn lawnmower would be a good buy. They perform well on uneven ground and most have the choice of side discharge, mulching or bagging. These mowers are expensive at around $3000 and more but are noted for their reliability and durability. Make sure you have a large area for storage as they are big!

Lawn and Garden Tractors

For larger lawns or for homeowners who need a multi use machine a lawn tractor would be a better buy. They are fast and are recommended for lawns over half an John Deere lawn tractoracre. Many come with a wide range of attachments, including snowblowers, front blades, hitches to pull a trailer etc. Moving small loads around your yard, clearing snow and clearing leaves, soil or debris with the front blade are all possible using these easy to swap attachments.
